The Cozy Neutral Beanie That Goes With Everything

crochet beanie in neutral colors

Looking for a textured crochet beanie that goes with absolutely everything? Meet Tiger. I made this one for women over 55 who want a warm, cozy hat that looks pulled together without any fuss, and the soft neutral color does exactly that. It works up fast in one skein of bulky yarn, it is full of pretty texture, and it suits just about any coat in your closet.

Here is the fun part of the name. Have you ever looked at a skein of yarn and felt instant inspiration? That is exactly what happened when I found this beautiful beige bulky cotton. Its warm, earthy tone reminded me of the soft fur of a tiger cub, and just like that, the Tiger beanie was born.

Do not let the name fool you. This hat is not orange and it is not striped. It is a cozy, neutral piece that complements almost any outfit. The name is really about how strong and versatile the design is, and maybe a little about how addictive it is to make. You might just find yourself buying more yarn for a second one.

What skill level is this beanie?

I have labeled this one intermediate, but do not let that scare you off if you are still fairly new to crochet. I have broken the steps down so a confident beginner can follow along, and if you are a seasoned crocheter, the Tiger is a quick and satisfying make.

What stitches does the Tiger beanie use?

Ready for some stitch fun? The Tiger uses the V stitch, which is my favorite, and the reversed single crochet, a stitch I love for finishing and edging. Do not let the names scare you. Both are broken down step by step in the pattern below.

Can I change the size of the beanie?

Absolutely. One of the best things about Tiger is how easy it is to size. It all comes down to the number of rounds in the cap before you start the body. Want it bigger or smaller? Add or take away a round. There is a standard hat size chart below to help you land the right fit.

Hook: US Size (5 mm)

Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape

Gauge

  • 8 rounds X 12 st ( 4” X 4”)

Sizes

  • This sample is women M size ( 7” in height X 20” in circumference)

Stitch Key

  • Ch = Chain
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • St = Stitch
  • Hdc = Half Double Crochet
  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • Yo = Yarn over
  • Slst = Slip stitch
  • INC = Increase round

A few tips before you start

  • Bulky yarn and a 5 mm hook make this a quick project. Keep your tension even so the texture stays crisp.
  • Try the cap on as you go. The number of cap rounds decides the final fit.
  • A pompom on top is optional, but it does finish things off nicely.

Sandra’s tip: the V stitch rounds and the dc rounds take turns, so once you have done one of each, the body almost crochets itself. That is when you can settle in with your show.

Specialty Stitches

VSt = V stitch

(Dc+ch+dc) in the next st, skip 2 st

Rsc = Reversed Single Crochet

Insert the hook, from front to back, in the next stitch to the right, Yarn over (yo) draw a loop, and finish the single crochet

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for this beanie?

Just one skein. The sample uses a bulky #5 cotton yarn, 100 g, about 57 yards. You can make it in one solid color or in two tones like I did.

What size does the Tiger beanie make?

The sample is a women’s medium, 7 inches tall and 20 inches around. You can adjust it to fit other sizes.

Can I make it bigger or smaller?

Yes. The fit comes from the number of rounds you work in the cap before the body. Add a round for a bigger hat, take one away for a smaller one. There is a hat size chart in the post to guide you.

Is this beanie good for beginners?

It is labeled intermediate, but the steps are broken down so a confident beginner can do it. You will use chain, double crochet, the V stitch, and the reversed single crochet, all explained in the pattern.

What yarn works best?

Any bulky #5 yarn works well. A different yarn or hook will change the final size, so check the fit as you go.

Can I add a pompom?

Yes, a pompom on top is a lovely optional finish. A faux fur one looks especially cozy.
