9 Easy Summer Crochet Projects (Under 2 Hours)

The quickest summer crochet projects to make in under two hours are small, useful things worked in cotton: bottle holders, a bandana, a market bag, washcloths, a little table runner, hot pads, and a set of coasters.

Nothing heavy, nothing fussy, just light and breezy makes you can finish in an afternoon. Every project below is one of my own free patterns, and unlike most summer roundups, these are not toys or novelties. They are things you will actually pick up and use all season.

Summer here in Israel is hot, so I want my hook busy with cotton and my projects small and portable, something I can take to the beach or work on with a cold drink by the window. These are also wonderful for using up cotton from your stash, and they make lovely quick gifts and market makes.

If you would rather watch me walk through them all, the full video is right here.

1. Crochet Water Bottle Holder

We drink a lot of water in the summer, so a bottle holder is the most useful little make on this list. This one is worked bottom up in a pretty double crochet cluster stitch, in cotton so you can toss it in the wash when it gets damp. My family uses ours constantly. It is a perfect first project and a great stash buster.

2. The Adriene Flower Granny Bandana

A cute bandana is exactly right for the beach, a summer festival, or a market table. The Adriene bandana is made from a flower granny square worked in halves, light and a little lacy, and it takes almost no time. I made mine in a soft vintage pink, but any cotton or cotton blend in a color you love will shine.

3. The Liri Boho Bag Holder

You know all those plastic bags that end up stuffed under the sink? The Liri bag holder keeps them tidy and easy to grab when you need one. It works up fast in cotton, using a simple hair tie at each end, and it is one of those quiet little makes that genuinely makes daily life neater. I made one for each of my daughters.

4. Easy Mesh Market Bag

This little mesh bag is my go to for summer, light enough to carry everywhere and just right for your phone, your sunglasses, or a few market finds. It is worked bottom up in my beloved V stitch with cheerful stripes, so it works up quickly. Keep the very small things at home though, since the V stitch leaves pretty open gaps.

5. Linen Stitch Square Washcloth

The linen stitch makes a wonderfully flat, soft fabric, and it looks gorgeous in a self striping cotton where the colors do all the work for you. A washcloth is the perfect quick make: small, satisfying, and finished in an evening. Lovely on its own or tied up with a bar of nice soap as a gift.

6. Granny Rectangle Table Runner

If you love a coastal look, this little granny rectangle centerpiece in crisp white and soft blue belongs on your table. It is not a long runner that drapes off the ends, just a sweet centerpiece you can finish quickly in 100 percent cotton. Change the colors and it suits any room.

7. Quick Coastal Dishcloth

A crisp white and light blue dishcloth that earns its place at the sink. This one uses a front post stitch pattern for a bit of texture, worked in 100 percent cotton so it washes again and again and keeps its shape. Please do reach for cotton here, never acrylic, since this one actually goes to work.

8. The Freyia Hot Pot Holders

I designed these while happily lost in a Viking show, which is how they earned their Nordic name. They are a fast, satisfying pair to make in two colors. One important note: make these in cotton, not acrylic, because they sit under hot pots and acrylic and heat do not mix.

9. Six Crochet Coasters (a Whole Set)

Last but not least, a generous one. Our spring coaster crochet along gave us six different coaster patterns, all my own designs, all gathered in one place. Make a matching set or mix the designs, in cotton so spills wipe away. It is the best kind of quick project, because you can keep going and end up with a whole set in an afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you crochet in under two hours? Plenty of useful things. Washcloths, coasters, a bottle holder, a bandana, hot pads, and a simple bag all come together in an afternoon or less, especially in a lighter yarn.

What is the best yarn for quick summer projects? Cotton or a cotton blend. It is breathable, it washes well, and it is exactly what you want for anything that lives near water or in the kitchen, like washcloths, dishcloths, and hot pads. Save acrylic for the bandana or the bag.

Can a beginner make these? Yes, every one of them. They are small, forgiving, and built from simple stitches, so they are a gentle place to start or a relaxing way to unwind if you have been crocheting for years.

What quick crochet projects make good gifts or market items? Bandanas, washcloths, coaster sets, and bottle holders are all fast, affordable, and well loved. They are perfect for last minute gifts, craft markets, or a little stash of handmade thank yous.

What can I make to use up cotton scraps? Washcloths, dishcloths, coasters, and hot pads are wonderful stash busters. A self striping or leftover cotton often gives the prettiest results with no planning at all.
