The Sedge stitch is a great option for crochet projects that need texture, movement, and style.
You can follow my step-by-step video tutorial and learn how to work the Sedge stitch.
I love this stitch and I am planning on using it in one of my future blankets. I think this crochet stitch can be great for tops, especially for the part we want to be dense and not see-through 🙂
Watch the video below for a step-by-step tutorial
It’s a great stitch because:
- It is a one-row repeat using a basic crochet stitch
- The sedge stitch uses only basic crochet stitches: single crochet stitch (sc), half double crochet stitch (hdc), and double crochet stitch (dc), making it perfect for any skill level.
- After mastering the basic repeat pattern, you’ll discover that the sedge stitch is wonderfully meditative and ideal for relaxed, automatic crocheting. This lovely stitch is bound to become a regular go-to in your crochet projects.
- So much texture in one single stitch!
- It works up really fast
Be creative!

I love how it looks stunning from both sides, making it perfect for cozy blankets and elegant scarves.
You can work it up into the most beautiful shawls and hats, and trust me – it makes the warmest, snuggliest baby blankets you can imagine.
I’ve found it’s especially great for home decor pieces too – try it for dishcloths and you’ll be amazed at the lovely texture it creates.
