Sedge Stitch Tutorial – Crochet Stitches

The Sedge stitch is a great option for crochet projects that need texture, movement, and style.

You can follow my step-by-step video tutorial and learn how to work the Sedge stitch.

I love this stitch and I am planning on using it in one of my future blankets. I think this crochet stitch can be great for tops, especially for the part we want to be dense and not see-through 🙂

Watch the video below for a step-by-step tutorial

It’s a great stitch because:

  1. It is a one-row repeat using a basic crochet stitch
  2. The sedge stitch uses only basic crochet stitches: single crochet stitch (sc), half double crochet stitch (hdc), and double crochet stitch (dc), making it perfect for any skill level.
  3. After mastering the basic repeat pattern, you’ll discover that the sedge stitch is wonderfully meditative and ideal for relaxed, automatic crocheting. This lovely stitch is bound to become a regular go-to in your crochet projects.
  4. So much texture in one single stitch!
  5. It works up really fast

Be creative!

Understanding the Sage Stitch: Basics and Materials

Let’s dive into the Sage Stitch. It’s easier than you might think!

What is the Sage Stitch?

The Sage Stitch creates a wavy pattern with a good feel. Both sides look great! It’s simple to do, once you learn it. This makes it good for beginners who want a cool design. The drape is lovely.

Essential Materials

Before we get started, lets gather your supplies.

Pick your favorite yarn color and a hook that feels comfy. Gather all the necessary tools! Let’s begin!

Step-by-Step Guide to Crocheting the Sage Stitch

Follow these steps to crochet the Sage Stitch. It is really quite simple!

Foundation Chain: Setting the Stage

First, you need to make a chain. The chain number needs to be right for the stitch to work. Use this formula: 3 + 1 (if you’re building on other stitches). If you’re starting from scratch, use 3 + 1 + 2.

For example, if you want a chain of 30, you would do a chain of 33 then add 3 more chains, making it 36 total. This will ensure the pattern works out correctly.

Row 1: Building the First Layer

Time to start the first row! Work a half double crochet and a double crochet into the third chain from your hook. Now, skip two chains. In the next chain, make one single crochet, one half double crochet, and one double crochet. That’s your first “cluster.” Repeat this pattern. Skip two chains, and make a cluster. Continue until the end. End the row with a single crochet in the last chain.

Row 2 (and beyond): Establishing the Pattern

Row 2 makes the Sage Stitch pattern! Chain one, then turn your work. Make one half double crochet and one double crochet in the first stitch. Skip two stitches. In the next stitch (the single crochet from the last row), make a cluster. That’s one single crochet, one half double crochet, and one double crochet. Keep repeating the cluster. Then, skip two, and make the cluster. Keep going across the row. End with a single crochet in the turning chain space.

Row 2 is what you repeat! Keep going to make your project bigger.

Maintaining Even Tension

Keep your tension steady! This means pulling the yarn the same amount for each stitch. If it’s too tight or loose, the fabric will not drape correctly. Practice on a little piece first. Then you can get used to the stitch.

Troubleshooting Common Mistakes

Sometimes mistakes happen. You might add extra stitches or not enough. Uneven edges can also happen. Check your work often. If you see an error, fix it right away. This keeps the pattern looking good.
