  • It has a playful, dotted texture, because the puff stitch pops up in every other row.
  • Also, it works up quickly, so it is a great gift for the cold months.
  • You can make it in one color or in several, as you wish.

About the Puff Stitch in This Crochet Scarf Pattern

One of my favorite things about this scarf pattern is the puff stitch. It is what gives the Dotless Scarf its charming dotted texture. Don’t let it look tricky, because the puff stitch is easy once you get the hang of it!

It adds a soft, squishy dimension to your crochet, so every row feels cozy and special. If you would like extra help, watch my step by step puff stitch video tutorial above. With a bit of practice, you will be making those adorable textured rows in no time.

For my sample, using the yarn I had: 12 st X 9 rows (4” X 4”) pattern repeat

Sizes

This sample is 6” X 70”

Stitch Key

Yellow and white puff stitch crochet scarf laid flat

Specialty Stitches: Puff St

Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space indicated, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), Yo, insert hook in same st, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), do it one more time (7 loops on your hook), Yo pull through all loops on hook, Ch 1

Sandra’s tip: Pull every loop up to the same height, so all your puffs match. Also, never skip the Ch 1 that closes the puff, because it keeps the stitch from loosening.

Notes

  • This pattern uses US terminology.
  • The pattern is worked in rows.
  • Also, Ch 3 at the beginning of the row does count as st.
  • However, this pattern uses pattern repeats.
  • Finally, you can work this pattern with one color or multiple, as you wish, and I used two solid colors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dotless Scarf beginner friendly?

Yes, it is an easy pattern for beginners and experienced crocheters. It uses chain, single crochet, double crochet and the puff stitch. However, the puff stitch takes a little practice, so watch the video first if you have not made it before.

How do I make the puff stitch?

First, yarn over and pull up a loop, and do this three times in the same stitch so you have 7 loops on the hook. Then yarn over, pull through all the loops and chain 1. The full written steps are in the Specialty Stitches section.

How do I keep my puffs even?

Pull every loop up to the same height, and keep your tension relaxed. Also, close each puff with the Ch 1, because it helps the stitch hold its shape. As a result, the puffs look the same from row to row.

How do I make the scarf wider?

Keep repeating rows 2 to 6 until the scarf is as wide as you like. The sample is 6 inches wide, and you work the scarf lengthwise from the long chain.

How long is the Dotless Scarf?

The sample is 70 inches long. The puff stitch fabric stretches, so the scarf ends up longer than the stitch count alone suggests.

Can I sell scarves made from this pattern?

Yes. You may not redistribute the pattern, but finished products can be sold with credit to this shop.

What yarn should I use?

I used 100% acrylic weight 4 yarn in yellow and white with a 5 mm hook. Any weight 4 yarn works. However, puffs use more yarn than plain stitches, so buy a little extra if you make your scarf wider.
