Free Crochet Shrug Pattern, The Hugs Shrug (Warm, Wearable, and Easy to Make)

Shrug time. This is the Hugs Shrug, the project you need after the holiday gifting is done and it’s finally your turn to make something for yourself.

Quick answer: The Hugs Shrug is made from one rectangle worked in an X treble stitch, then folded and joined at the sides to form armholes, with a simple half double crochet ribbing added around the edges to finish. It’s rated easy for beginners and works up fast.

What can I tell you about the Hugs Shrug?

1. Looking for a very quick stitch, I chose the X treble and it flies.
2. Color blocking is my favorite, but using one solid color works beautifully too.
3. Kartopu yarn is so soft you barely feel it on your shoulders, but it has 20% wool, which makes it warm and fluffy.

Materials

• Kartopu, Melange Wool 100 gr, 80 % Acrylic,20% wool, 170 m, Color A (Gray) ( 2 Skeins)
• Kartopu, Melange Wool 100 gr, 80 % Acrylic,20% wool, 170 m, Color B (Green) (1 Skeins)
• Hook: US Size J-10 (8 mm) 
• Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape

Gauge

• 11 st  X 8 rows

Sizes

• This sample is: 27” height and 37” long 

Stitch Key

• Ch = Chain, Sc = Single Crochet 
• St = Stitch, Tr = Treble Crochet
• Hdc = Half double crochet
• Slst = Slip stitch

Specialty Stitches

X Treble Stitch: (Xtr)  skip next stitch, tr 1 in next, tr 1 in skipped st to form an X

Sandra’s tip: If wool isn’t right for you, whether it’s an allergy or a warm climate, swap in any acrylic or cotton yarn instead. Just make a gauge swatch first, and try a couple of hook sizes to get the drape you want, tighter and denser, or open and airy

Notes

• The pattern is worked in rows
• Ch1 does not count as st at the beginning of each row
• Ch 4 at the beginning of row counts as a treble stitch
• You can work this pattern with one color or multiple as you wish- I used two colors
• This pattern is worked as a rectangle and Joined  to form  the shrug
• If changing colors make sure to have a changing technique and weave your ends in.
• You can decide on the width and length of the shrug by adding chains and rows

Instructions

Chain 97 (odd #)

Start with color A

Row 1: Sc 1 in 2nd ch from hook, sc 1 in next and across to the end of chains, turn (96)

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as tr), skip 1st sc, Xtr in next and across to the end of the row, finish with tr 1 on last st, turn  (96)

Row 3: Ch1, sc 1 in 1st st from hook, sc 1 in next and across to the end of the row, turn  (96)

Row 4-22: Repeat row 2+3

Change to color B

Row 23: Ch1, sc 1 in 1st st from hook, sc 1 in next and across to the end of the row, turn  (96)

Row 24: Ch 4 (counts as tr), skip 1st sc, Xtr in next and across to the end of the row, finish with tr 1 on last st, turn  (96)

Row 25-33:  Repeat row 23+24

Construction

Fold and join  8 rows from both sides using the tapestry needle as in the sketch below for the arm holes

Finishing

Using Color A, introduce yarn to work a ribbing around,

Round 1: Ch 1, hdc 1 in 1st st, hdc 1 in next and on each st around, sl st to ch 1 at the beginning

Round 2 +3: Hdc 1 on 1st st from hook, hdc 1 on next and around, sl st to ch1.

Cut your yarn and weave in the ends.

FAQ

Can I use a different yarn if I’m allergic to wool or live somewhere warm? Yes. Any acrylic or cotton yarn works as a substitute. Make a gauge swatch first and try a couple of hook sizes, you can go looser and more open, or tighter and more dense, depending on the feel you want.

When the pattern says treble crochet, is that US or UK terms? This pattern, like all of mine, is written in US terminology. So treble crochet here means the US treble stitch.

What weight yarn does the Hugs Shrug use? It’s a #4 worsted weight yarn. The sample was worked with an 8mm hook for an open, airy fabric, you can size down for a denser result if you prefer.

Can I make the Hugs Shrug bigger or smaller? Yes. Add or remove chains and rows to adjust the width and length to fit you.
