About Tartan vs Plaid
Ever wondered about the difference between tartan and plaid?
While many people use these terms interchangeably, there’s actually a fascinating distinction that might surprise you.
Tartan is a specific type of pattern with Scottish roots, featuring crisscrossing colored bands in a precise, traditional design that often represents a particular Scottish clan or family.
Plaid, on the other hand, is a broader term that describes any criss-crossed or checkered pattern, which can include tartan but isn’t limited to its traditional Scottish origins.
Think of tartan as a specific type of plaid with cultural significance, while plaid is more of a general design style you might see on everything from flannel shirts to home decor. I
Interestingly, in North America, “plaid” is often used to describe what the Scots would traditionally call a tartan!

Measure 1.5 the length of your scarf and cut strands of yarn in groups of 3 for each color.
In my sample, I had 4 (3 strands) in mustard, 4 (3 strands in grey, and 2 ( 3 strands in brown)
Lay the scarf as in the photo and using your tapestry needle weave in 3 strands together in between the rows, leaving enough tail for fringe
Fringe
Work two groups of 3 strands together and make a knot
