The Susana Summer Crochet Shawl Wrap: A Soothing Make

The Susana summer crochet shawl wrap is an easy, lightweight rectangle you can finish with only basic stitches, and it is a gentle, satisfying project for crochet for women over 55 who want something calming to work on.

If you know single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch, you already know almost everything this shawl asks of you.

It works up in a simple two row repeat that you will memorize after a few rows, in a soft #4 cotton blend that drapes lightly over the shoulders for warm evenings.

You can make it as a scarf, a shawl, or a wider wrap by adjusting your starting chain. The full written pattern is free further down this page, and there is a step by step video tutorial too

The story behind the Susana shawl

This Susana summer crochet shawl wrap is named for a memory I have carried for more than fifty years.

My grandmother was a Turkish immigrant to Buenos Aires, Argentina in the early 1900s. The warm colors and the soft feel of this shawl remind me of the oranges she used to peel for me in the evenings I spent at her house when I was a little girl.

We would sit out on the patio, eat oranges, and chat with the ladies as the light went down. That memory is still so vivid, even now.

Summer Crochet Shawl

Is the Susana shawl good for beginners?

Yes. This is one of the friendliest shawls you can choose if you are returning to crochet or still building your confidence.

The whole piece is worked flat as a rectangle, so there is no shaping, no increasing, and no decreasing to keep track of. You simply repeat two rows until the shawl is as long as you like.

The only stitches you need are single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch, plus one easy specialty stitch I explain below. If you can work those, you can make this shawl.

Choosing yarn for a summer crochet shawl

For a shawl you can wear on warm evenings, reach for a lightweight, breathable yarn. I used a cotton blend in a #4 weight, which keeps the fabric soft and drapey without feeling heavy.

Cotton and cotton blends are lovely for summer because they breathe and they soften beautifully with washing.

You can work this pattern in any yarn weight and hook size. Just know that a lighter yarn gives you a more delicate, airy wrap, and a heavier yarn gives you a warmer one.

How to make your shawl any size

This is the part beginners love. The pattern uses a repeat of 17 chains plus 1, so you choose how wide you want your shawl and chain a multiple of 17 plus 1.

The same pattern becomes a narrow scarf, a generous shawl, or a wide wrap, depending on your starting chain and how many rows you work.

Notes

  • This pattern is written in US terminology
  • This Pattern is beginner-friendly, it uses only basic stitches, of course, you have to be familiar with single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch, if you are not please visit any YouTube channel tutorial before starting this project.
  • Ch 3 at the beginning of the row does count as st
  • This pattern uses repeats of 17 ch +1, so you calculate how wide you prefer your shawl to be and sum a multiple of 17 ch +1
  • You can make a scarf, a shawl or a blanket using the same pattern
  • Additional Notes: I made a shawl using 4 multiples of 17X4= 68 st + 1

A few tips before you start

This shawl is meant to be relaxing, so settle in and let it be slow. The body is just two rows repeating, which makes it perfect for evenings when you want your hands busy and your mind quiet.

Sandra’s tip: Do not rush Row 2. Work it slowly the first two or three times until the rhythm clicks. After that, your hands will remember it and you can crochet while you chat or watch your favorite show.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Susana shawl good for beginners?

Yes. It is worked as a simple flat rectangle with a two row repeat and only basic stitches, so there is no shaping to worry about. It is a friendly choice if you are new to crochet or coming back to it after a break.

What yarn is best for a summer crochet shawl?

A lightweight, breathable yarn like cotton or a cotton blend is ideal for summer. I used a #4 weight cotton blend for a soft drape that is not too heavy on warm days.

How much yarn do I need for the Susana shawl?

I used two colors with two skeins of each, at about 208 yards (190 m) per 100 g skein. Your exact amount will depend on how long and how wide you make your shawl.

Can I make the shawl bigger or smaller?

Absolutely. The pattern repeats over 17 chains plus 1, so you can chain any multiple of 17 plus 1 to set your width, then work as many rows as you like for the length. The same pattern makes a scarf, a shawl, or a wide wrap.

Can I sell shawls I make from this pattern?

You are welcome to sell finished shawls you make, as long as you credit Sandra Stitches. The pattern itself is copyright protected and may not be shared or resold.
