The Lightest Summer Shawl You Can Crochet

Want a light summer shawl you can crochet without any fuss? The Flower Star is it. I made this lace crochet shawl for women over 55 who want something pretty and easy to wear, and this one is just two rows you repeat the whole way. It is so open and airy you can feel the breeze right through it, which keeps you comfy without overheating.

This is the wrap I reach for on those days when you cannot tell if it will be warm or chilly.

Throw it on over a tank top for a morning coffee run. That same night, wrap it around for dinner with the girls and suddenly your whole outfit looks finished. It works with jeans, it works with a dress, it works with everything.

The lace looks fancy, but do not let that scare you. Once you get the first row down, the rest is just rows 2 and 3 over and over, until your shawl is as big as you like. You pick the color, the length, and the width.

The full written pattern is below for free. There is also a printable PDF if you would rather not crochet from your screen. Ready? Let’s make something pretty together.

Why you’ll love this lace shawl

Lace shawls are a little bit magic. They weigh almost nothing, they pack down small in your bag, and they pull an outfit together in two seconds flat. This one is light enough for a warm evening but still gives your shoulders a soft layer when the air turns cool.

The best part is how easy it is to make it your own. Want it longer? Keep going. Want it wider? Add more chains at the start. Want it in one calm color or a main color with a pretty accent? Your choice. The pattern bends to whatever you want.

Is this lace shawl hard to make?

No. If you can chain, single crochet, and work a treble crochet, you can make this shawl. The whole thing is built from just two rows that take turns, so once you have done them a couple of times your hands settle into the rhythm and you can relax.

A few notes before you start

  • This pattern is written in US terminology
  • The pattern is worked in vertical rows
  • Ch 6  at the beginning of the row does count as Tr +Ch2
  • This pattern uses pattern repeats.
  • You can work this pattern with one color or multiple as you wish- I used one solid color for the main part and an accent color.
  • If changing colors make sure to have a changing technique and weave your ends in.
  • You can decide on the width and length of the Shawl by adding multiples of chains at the foundation and row repeats.
  • This pattern calls for chain multiples of 10+7

A few tips before you start

  • This shawl loves a light hand. Keep your tension relaxed so the lace stays open and airy.
  • Count your stitches at the end of row 1 before you settle in. Once that foundation row is right, the rest follows along.
  • A gentle blocking at the end opens the lace up beautifully and makes the flower star really show.

Sandra’s tip: the whole shawl is just rows 2 and 3 on repeat. Once you have done each of them once, you barely need the pattern. That is when it becomes the kind of project you can crochet while you chat or watch your show.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for this shawl?

This sample uses 2 skeins of Cygnet Aran in cream plus a little bit of a blush accent color. Each skein is 100 g, 210 m, 230 yards. If you want a bigger shawl, buy an extra skein to be safe.

What size does the Flower Star shawl come out?

The sample measures 65 inches long and 15 inches wide. You can make yours any size you like.

Can I make the shawl bigger or smaller?

Yes, easily. The pattern uses chain multiples of 10+7, so add more chains at the start for a wider shawl, and repeat rows 2 and 3 more times for a longer one. Stop whenever it is the size you want.

Is this lace shawl good for beginners?

Yes. It only uses chain, single crochet, and treble crochet, and the whole shawl is a simple two row repeat. If you are comfortable with the basic stitches, you can make this.

What yarn can I use instead of Cygnet Aran?

Any aran or worsted weight yarn works well. For an even lighter, lacier shawl, drop down to a DK or lace weight yarn and a smaller hook. Just remember a different yarn will change the final size.

Can I make it in one color?

Of course. It looks lovely in one calm solid color, or in a main color with a pretty accent like I used. It is completely up to you.
