The Shalom Wrap is a free, beginner friendly crochet wrap worked in one simple chevron stitch.
After the first row sets up the pattern, you repeat a single row the whole way, so there is almost nothing to memorize. It is made in one cake of variegated number 5 yarn, about 400 yards, and the color changes do all the work for you with no swapping skeins.
The finished wrap measures about 16 inches wide by 65 inches long, generous enough to wrap, drape, or tie. Below you will find the full written pattern for free, a step by step video tutorial, and an ad free printable PDF if you would like to support the blog.
Shalom means peace in Hebrew, and that calm is exactly what I wanted you to feel while you stitch this one.
The gentle ripples of the chevron and the slow shift of color make it the kind of project you reach for at the end of a long day. It is just as soothing for a brand new crocheter as it is for someone who has been hooking for years.

Why a Variegated Yarn Crochet Wrap Works So Well
One of the best parts of this project is how beautiful it looks in variegated yarn.
The color changes create natural stripes and depth without you having to switch skeins even once.
A variegated yarn crochet wrap like the Shalom is the perfect way to show off shifting tones while you enjoy a relaxing, meditative make.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much yarn do I need for the Shalom Wrap? About 404 yards of a number 5 bulky weight yarn, which is roughly one 200 gram cake. One cake of self striping or variegated yarn is perfect, since the color changes happen on their own.
Is the chevron stitch hard for a beginner? Not at all. Row 1 sets up the chevron, and after that you repeat Row 2 the whole way. Once you have worked a few rows the rhythm becomes second nature.
What yarn is best for a chevron wrap? A variegated or self striping yarn shows off the chevron beautifully, because the color shifts create the stripes for you. The sample uses a number 5 yarn, but you can use any yarn you love and match your hook to it.
Can I make the wrap bigger or smaller? Yes. The stitch pattern works over multiples of 10 plus 2, so you can begin with a longer or shorter starting chain in that count, then repeat Row 2 until the wrap reaches the length you want.
Do I have to change colors myself? No. That is the beauty of variegated yarn. The shades change as you go, so you can simply relax and stitch.
Is there a video tutorial? Yes. You can watch the full step by step video near the top of this post and crochet right along with me.
