Crochet Bar Stitch Tutorial – Crochet Stitches

The crochet Bar stitch tutorial will help you learn to work this amazing and super textures simple stitch pattern.

I also fell in love with it because of its name: Bar.

In English Bar means a long rod or rigid piece of wood, metal, or similar material, but in Hebrew Bar means “wild” and it is my grandson’s name!

Be creative!

Understanding the Bar Stitch

The Bar stitch gives a cool texture. It’s also dense, so it’s great for making warm stuff. It looks nice on blankets and scarves. You can even use it for things like washcloths.

What Makes the Bar Stitch Unique?

The front post double crochet is what makes this stitch pop. It gives it that cool bar look. You need to chain in sets of three, plus three more. The pattern repeats every two rows.

What I love about the Bar stitch

Let me tell you about this amazing bar stitch – it’s such a clever little pattern!

The coolest thing about it is how it creates this horizontal “bar” effect, giving your fabric a woven look.

The texture is really unique – when you run your hand over it, you can feel those raised bars, which add such nice dimension to your work.

It’s one of those stitches that looks way more complicated than it actually is, and once you get into the rhythm, you’ll find yourself just cruising along. Perfect for when you want to make something that’ll really catch people’s eye and have them asking, “How did you do that?”

Getting Started: Materials and Foundation

Let’s get your stuff ready and learn how to set up the base for the stitch.

Choosing Your Yarn and Hook

Choose your yarn and hook. For the Bar Stitch, pick a yarn that feels good to you. If changing colors, use yarn of the same weight. This keeps your project looking even. Some yarns that work well here include worsted weight and DK.

Creating the Foundation Chain

Start by making a slip knot. Then, chain in multiples of 3, plus 3 more. This is important for the stitch pattern to work. For example, you could chain 18 (six sets of 3) plus 3, for a total of 21.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Bar Stitch

Now, let’s learn how to work each row of the stitch pattern.

Rows 1-3: Establishing the Foundation Rows

The first three rows are your base. Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Continue with single crochet in each chain across. Row 2: Chain one, turn. Single crochet in each stitch across. Row 3 is a little different, so pay attention. It sets up the bars. Remember to count your stitches!

Row 3: Creating the Front Post Foundation

Chain one, turn. Single crochet in the first two stitches. Then, yarn over. Work a front post double crochet around the third single crochet from the first row. Skip the stitch behind the front post. This creates the raised “bar” effect.

Rows 4-5: The Two-Row Repeat

Rows 4 and 5 are the pattern that repeats. Row 4: Chain one, turn. Single crochet in each stitch across. Row 5: Chain one, turn. Single crochet in the first two stitches. Front post double crochet around the front post from the previous row. Keep doing this over and over!

Changing Colors Seamlessly

When you want to switch colors, do it at the end of a row. Finish the last stitch with the new color. Chain one and turn. Weave in the ends to hide them. This keeps your work clean.

Maintaining Consistent Tension

Keep your tension even. Not too tight, not too loose. If it is too tight, the stitches will scrunch up. If it is too loose, the project will be floppy. Focus and keep a steady hand.

Troubleshooting Common Mistakes

Did you add or lose a stitch? Check your work often. The front post should line up over front posts. If the edges get wavy, you should take the time to frog it, and start over, counting carefully.

A new stitch steps

  • When learning a new stitch, try several yarn weights and hook sizes to understand how the stitch works and looks.
  • Use light yarn colors to get the stitch to form the right shape.
  • Make several swatches before starting a new project
