Lacy Chevron Crochet Stitch Tutorial – Crochet Stitches

This Lacy Chevron crochet stitch pattern is a fairly easy lace stitch that creates an airy, openwork fabric with columns of arrow-like motifs. It has a great drape and is perfect for shawls and afghans.

What I love about the Lacy Chevron stitch

Oh, wait until you try this lacy chevron stitch – it’s actually easier than it looks!

While it creates this gorgeous, airy zigzag pattern that looks super fancy, you’re really just working with basic increases and decreases to create those peaks and valleys.

The lacey gaps give it this delicate, almost vintage feel that’s perfect for shawls and lightweight scarves.

Don’t be intimidated by how intricate it looks – once you get into the rhythm of the pattern repeat, you’ll find yourself flying through the rows. Trust me, your friends will think you spent ages mastering this one!

What You’ll Need

Before starting, gather your materials:

  • Hook: 5 mm crochet hook (or size recommended for your yarn).
  • Yarn: A four-weight yarn works perfectly for this stitch. Choose the color and type of yarn based on your project.
  • Stitch Multiple: This pattern works in multiples of 19 + 4. For instance, if you want a broader project, keep chaining sets of 19 until you’ve reached your desired width, then add four extra chains at the end.

That’s all you need to begin!

Understanding the Structure

The Lacy Chevron stitch forms triangular peaks and valleys across your project. It’s a two-row repeat, so once you establish the foundation and practice the rhythm, it becomes almost second nature. The peak design brings a delicate yet structured texture, making it perfect for projects that need both style and comfort.

Foundation Row: Setting the Base

  1. Create your starting chain. Using the multiple of 19 + 4 formula, chain the desired number of stitches. For this tutorial, we’ll assume 19 + 4 for simplicity.
  2. Begin with the first double crochet. Skip the first four chains from your hook (these act as the first double crochet). Work your double crochet into the fifth chain.
  3. Build the first section of the chevron pattern.
    • Work the sequence: chain 1, skip 1 chain, then double crochet into the next chain. Repeat this step three times.
    • For symmetry, chain 1, skip 1, then create the peak: work 1 double crochet, chain 3, and another double crochet in the same chain.
    • Chain 1, skip 1, and mirror the first segment: work a double crochet, repeat chain 1 and skip 1 for three times.
  4. Create the valley. At the end of the row: chain 1, skip 1, and work a double crochet two together, skipping one chain between the two parts. This sets the shape for the valley.

Congratulations! You’ve finished the foundation row. It lays the groundwork for the stunning chevron texture.

Row 2: First Repeat Row

  1. Chain 3 to start. This serves as your first double crochet.
  2. Work into the spaces. Skip the first chain-1 space and double crochet into the next double crochet from the previous row. Continue alternating:
    • Double crochet into chain spaces.
    • Double crochet into the double crochet stitches of the prior row.
  3. From the peak. When you reach the chain-3 space at the peak, work:
    • Two double crochets into the chain-3 space.
    • Chain 3.
    • Two more double crochets into the same space.
  4. Keep it balanced. Repeat the alternating double crochets as before, ensuring symmetry on both sides of your work.
  5. Finish with the valley. For the last three stitches, work double crochet two together as described before. This step lines up the edges.

At the end of Row 2, you’ve completed the first true repeat row. The chevron pattern should now start to take shape!

Row 3: Second Repeat Row

This row builds on Row 2 but incorporates the gaps to keep the lacy texture intact.

  1. Chain 3 to begin. Skip the first chain space.
  2. Work the open section. Alternate: chain 1, skip 1, and double crochet into the next stitch. Repeat this sequence until reaching the peak.
  3. Shape the peak. Once at the chain-3 space:
    • Work 1 double crochet into it.
    • Chain 3.
    • Work another double crochet into the same space.
  4. Mirror the pattern. Continue the chain 1, skip 1, and double crochet sequence until the end.
  5. Close with the valley. Finish with double crochet two together, ensuring it lines up neatly with previous rows.

With Rows 2 and 3 forming the repeat, you’ll simply alternate these steps for the remainder of your project.

Customizing the Stitch for Your Projects

The beauty of the crochet lacy chevron stitch tutorial is its adaptability. Need a soft, airy shawl? Use a lightweight yarn or even a lace-weight option. Making a cozy blanket? Stick to thicker yarns like worsted or chunky. This stitch suits any project that needs a little texture and a lot of charm.

If you want bold stripes of color, the chevron shape naturally highlights color changes. Simply switch yarns at the start of any row to create striking contrasts.

Tips for Success

  • Count your stitches! To keep your edges straight and your peaks matching on both sides, confirm your stitch count after each row.
  • Choose the right hook size. For a looser, more open look, move up a hook size. For tighter stitches, go down a size.
  • Practice makes perfect. If this is your first time working with chevrons or two-row repeats, practice on a small swatch before starting your main project.
