What Is An Infinity Scarf?

An infinity scarf is a closed circle with no loose ends. They tend to be long enough to wrap around your neck multiple times. (A cowl is similar in concept but usually goes around only once.)

I LOVE infinity scarves they’re super versatile and can be made in any yarn with the corresponding crochet hook.

This pattern combines a gorgeous granny square transformed into an infinity scarf!

Let’s get to the pattern, shall we? Making the Adriene Square Infinity Scarf

Project-Level-Intermediate

Materials

Stylecraft Special Chunky, 100 gr, 100% Premium Acrylic. 144 m / 157 yards, a total of 138 grams- 1.5 skeins in two colors

Hook: US Size (6 mm) 

Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape

Gauge

  • Each square is 8” X 8” ( after blocking)

Sizes

  • This sample is 8” wide and 48” long / circumference

Notes

  • This pattern is written in US terminology
  • This pattern is worked in rounds
  • This pattern uses 6 identical squares joined
  • Ch3 does count as st at the beginning of each row
  • Ch1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch

Instructions

Full Square – make six

Ch 8, join with a SI st to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 16 sc in ring, join with SI st to first sc. 

Round 2: Ch 7 (counts as dc, ch 4), skip next sc, *1 dc in next sc, ch 4, skip next sc, rep from * SI st in 3rd ch of the beg ch-7 (8 dc, 8 ch-4 sp).

Round 3: Ch 1, [1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc] in each ch-4 sp around (skip the dc st from prev round), Slst to ch 1 at beg (8 petals)

Round 4:  Ch 8 (counts as dc, ch 5), *1 sc between 2 dc of next petal, ch 5, 1 sc between 2 dc of next petal, ch 5**, 1 dc between the next 2 sc, ch 5, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, join with SI st to 3rd ch of beg ch-8

Now we turn the round to a square

Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in first st (in the same spot of the ch 3) (half corner made), *[4 dc in next ch-5 sp] 3 times, [2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in next st(full corner made), rep from * 3 times more, ending last rep, [2 dc, ch 3] in beg ch-3 of previous round, join with a SI st to top of beg ch-3 (first corner complete)

Round 6: Change color and repeat Round 5 working 1 dc on each dc and dc2+ch3+dc2 on each corner

Finishing

Weave in all ends and block the squares

Join each square to the next forming a scarf using the tapestry needle and sewing each back loop st from the near square to the front loop st of the next.

Optional: If you wish to leave it open stop here, you may want to add more squares for length

For a cowl/infinity scarf. Close the scarf by sewing the first to the last square in the same method.
