How to Crochet on a budget

Is it possible to crochet on a budget?

As a crocheter myself, I understand how expensive it can be to afford quality yarns for our projects. It’s no secret that yarn can quickly become an expensive habit, especially if you love working with high-end, luxurious fibers. However, there are some creative ways to save money and make your yarn budget stretch further. Here are a few personal tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way  including one of my favorites, upcycling yarn from old projects

Thrift Stores and Garage Sales

One of the easiest ways to get your hands on cheap yarn is to scour your local thrift stores and garage sales. You’d be surprised at how many people donate their unused yarn stashes or sell them at garage sales. Thrift stores often have large bags of yarn on sale for a fraction of their original price, and you can find some unique fibers and colors that you might not have found otherwise.

Online Yarn Destash Groups

Another great way to save money on yarn is to join online destash groups. These groups are often hosted on social media platforms like Facebook, and they allow yarn enthusiasts to sell or trade their unused yarns at a discounted price. It’s a great way to get your hands on higher-end yarns that you might not have been able to afford otherwise.

Here are some group suggestions:

Buy Yarn in Bulk

Buying yarn in bulk is another way to save money in the long run. This is especially true if you have a particular project in mind that requires a lot of yarn. Many online retailers and craft stores offer bulk discounts for larger orders, and you can save a significant amount of money by buying in bulk.

Try Ice Yarns ( when buying large quantities the price is very affordable)

Make Your Own Yarn

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try making your own yarn. There are plenty of online tutorials and books that can teach you how to spin your own yarn using a spinning wheel or drop spindle. You can also try repurposing old t-shirts or fabric scraps into yarn by cutting them into strips and twisting them together.

Attend Yarn Swaps

Yarn swaps are events where yarn enthusiasts gather to trade yarn with each other. They’re a great way to meet other crocheters and exchange yarns that you no longer need. You can often find local yarn swaps on social media platforms or through local yarn stores.

And my favorite one!

Upcycle Yarn from Old Projects

Sometimes, you may have a project that didn’t turn out the way you wanted, or maybe you’ve just grown tired of it. Instead of letting it go to waste, you can unravel the project and repurpose the yarn for another project. This is a great way to save money and reduce waste, and it can also give you a chance to get creative with the colors and textures of the yarn.

To unravel a project, you’ll need to carefully undo the stitches and wind the yarn into a ball.

This can be a bit time-consuming, but the end result is worth it. Make sure to wind the yarn tightly and evenly, so that it doesn’t become tangled or knotted.

Once you have your ball of recycled yarn, you can use it for a new project. You can mix and match it with other leftover yarns to create a unique color scheme, or you can use it on its own for a simple and elegant project.

When working with recycled yarn, keep in mind that the yarn may have some imperfections, such as kinks or knots, that can affect the look of your finished project. However, this can also add character and texture to your work.

Upcycling yarn from old projects is a great way to save money and reduce waste. It’s also a fun way to experiment with different colors and textures of yarn, and it can add a personal touch to your projects. So next time you have a project that doesn’t quite work out, don’t throw it away – unravel it and give the yarn a new life in a new project!

Another great way to crochet on a budget is to simply use what you already have in your yarn stash.

As crocheters, we all know how easy it is to accumulate a stash of yarn over time. Sometimes, we forget about the yarn we already have and end up buying more at the store. So, instead of making a trip to the yarn store, take a deep dive into your yarn stash and see what treasures you can find.

By using the yarn you already have, you’ll not only save money, but you’ll also challenge yourself to get creative with your color combinations and project ideas. Plus, it’s always satisfying to use up yarn that’s been sitting in your stash for a while.

Remember:

Crocheting on a budget is all about being creative and resourceful. Whether you’re buying yarn in bulk, upcycling old projects, or attending yarn swaps, there are plenty of ways to save money and make your yarn budget stretch further. So don’t let a tight budget keep you from indulging in your love of crochet. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, you can create beautiful projects without breaking the bank.
