Cozy Crochet Cape Pattern – The Forest Tales

So, I’ve been working on this cozy crochet cape pattern, and I’m pretty excited about it. I’m calling it “Forest Tales” – cute, right?

It’s perfect for the time of year when you’re not sure if you need a jacket. You know those days when the weather can’t make up its mind?

Anyway, it’s sort of a poncho style, but with a bit more flair. I was inspired by a trip to Scandinavia a few years back and the gorgeous color of the green yarn. There’s something so magical about the forest as it gets ready for winter, you know? I tried to capture that feeling in the pattern.

It’s super cozy – like wearing a warm hug. I’ve been throwing it on over everything from t-shirts to sweaters. It’s great for those chilly morning dog walks or when you’re just lounging around the house with a cup of tea.

let’s talk about styling that Cozy Crochet Cape / Poncho:

So, you’ve made your cozy cape – now what? Trust me, this thing is way more versatile than you might think.

I’ve been throwing mine on over pretty much everything. Jeans and a tee? Boom, instant boho chic. Dress and boots? Hello, Autumn Romance. I even wore it over my pajamas for a quick coffee run (don’t judge).

The key is to play with layers.

Try a turtleneck underneath for extra snug vibes, or go for a flowy blouse if you’re feeling fancy.

And don’t forget accessories! A long necklace or a chunky scarf can really amp up the look.

Oh, and belting it at the waist? Game changer for shape.

Let’s get to the pattern, shall we? Making the Forest Tales Cape / Poncho

Materials

Cascade Yarns Pacific  40% Merino wool / 60% Acrylic, 100g; 195m (213 yds), used 150gr, 213 yards ( 300 yards) Worsted / Medium weight

Find substitutions HERE or any weight #5 yarn

You can work this pattern with any yarn weight and hook size, it will change the measurements.

Or any weight #4 yarn

Hook: US Size (5 mm) 

Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape

Gauge

• 14 st X 7 rounds DC st [4” X 4”]

Sizes

• One size women 
• 14” , 35 cm- tall 
• 24” inch / 61 cm Circumference 

Stitch Key

• Ch = Chain
• Sc = Single Crochet
• St = Stitch
• Dc = Double Crochet
• Hdc = Half Double Crochet
• Yo = Yarn over
• INC = Increase round
• Slst = Slip stitch

Specialty Stitches

V -st : [dc+ ch1+dc in same st, sk 2, repeat] 

Lacy Picot st: [Ch 6,slst in 3rd ch from top down, ch3, sk 3 st, sc 1 in 4th st]

• This pattern is written in US terminology
• This pattern is worked in rounds
• Ch 3 does count as st at the beginning of each round
• Ch1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch

Instructions

Starting chain (  you will need multiples of 3 for the pattern)

Ch 81– lay the chain flat and sl to 1st ch to form a round

Round 1: Ch1, sc 1 in 1st ch from hook, sc 1 in next ch and around in every ch, slst to 1st st to close the round (81) 

Round 2: Ch1, sc 1 in 1st st from hook, sc 1 in next st and around in every st, slst to 1st st to close the round (81) 

Round 3: Ch 3 (does count as a st, here and throughout), skip 2 st,  V st ( dc in next st, ch 1, dc 1 in same st) , *[skip 2 st, V st ]* repeat from *to* all the way around , finish with dc+ch1,sl st to 1st dc – 81 st

You should have 27 V stitches around

Round 4: Inc Round : Ch 3 (does count as a st, here and throughout),*[dc in next st, dc 2 in ch space from v- st in prev round, dc 1 in next st, dc 1 in next st, dc 1 in ch space, dc1 in next st]*  repeat from * to * around to end of round, sl st to 1st dc – increasing in every other V st as shown in photo

Let’s continue

Round 5: Ch 3 (does count as a st, here and throughout), sk 2,  V st ( sk2, dc in next st, ch 1, dc 1 in same st) all the way around , slst to 1st dc. 

Round 6: Inc Ch 3 (does count as a st, here and throughout),*[dc in next st, dc 2 in ch space from v- st in prev round, dc 1 in next st, dc 1 in next st, dc 1 in ch space, dc1 in next st]* and repeat all the way around to end of round, sl st to 1st dc — increasing in every other V st

Round 7: Ch 3 (does count as a st, here and throughout), skip 2,  V st ( skip 2, dc in next st, ch 1, dc 1 in same st) all the way around , slst to 1st dc.

Here you can decide to continue and increase your Cape adding more repeats of rounds 3+4

If not we stop the increase now and work rounds without increasing.

Round 11-12:  Ch 3, dc in next st, dc in every st around to end of round.

Round 13: : Ch 3 ,dc in next  2st, ch 1, skip 1,*[ dc in next 3 st, ch 1,skip 1, dc in next 3 st]* repeat from *to*  and all the way around the end of round, slst to 1st dc!

Round 14: : Ch 5 (first 3 ch count as st, next 2 ch count as ch space), dc in ch space from prev round, *[ch 3, sk 3 , dc 1 in ch space from prev round]* repeat from *to*  to end of round ,finish with 1 dc , slst to 3rd ch.

 Round 15: : Ch 3 ,dc 2  in ch space, *[dc1 on top of dc from prev round, dc 3 in ch space]* repeat from *to*  to end of round ( this is a dc’s round

Round 16: : Ch 5 (first 3 ch count as st, next 2 ch count as ch space), dc in ch space from prev round, *[ch 3, sk 3 , dc 1 in ch space from prev round]* repeat from *to*  to end of round ,finish with 1 dc , slst to 3rd ch.

Round 17-21: Repeat rounds 15+16

If you wish to make this Cape/ Poncho longer- add more  repeats of rounds 15+16

The Lacy Picot st around the edge
