Welcome to Granny Friday: A New Crochet Journey!

Hello and welcome! I am Sandra, the designer behind Sandra Stitches, and I am so excited to introduce a brand-new series on the channel: Granny Friday.

The idea behind this series is simple: every two weeks, I’ll sit down and crochet a single granny square.

There is no master plan for these squares yet, I’m just letting the creativity flow to see where it leads us.

Whether they eventually become a blanket or something else entirely, we will figure that out together once we have enough of them.

Before we dive into the details, you can watch the very first square come to life right here! Join me as I navigate color choices and a few “learning moments” in the studio.

The Granny Friday Mission

As you can see in the infographic below, this series is built on three main pillars:

  1. Bi-Weekly Friday Releases: New videos launch every two weeks to showcase a single, beautiful square.
  2. Mindful, No-Plan Crocheting: We are focusing on the peaceful process and skill development rather than rushing toward a final product.
  3. Unique Free Patterns: I’m diving into the Pinterest “rabbit hole” to find creative, beginner-friendly designs that keep things interesting.

Project Essentials: Materials & Hook Pairing

For this project, I’ve decided to use Paris by Drops, which is a 100% cotton yarn. I chose cotton over acrylic because I love the crisp stitch definition and the color combinations I already had in my stash.

  • Yarn: Paris by Drops (100% Cotton).
  • Hook & Yarn Pairing: I am combining DK weight (Category 3) yarn with a 4.5mm crochet hook to ensure the stitches are breathable and soft.

Our First Square: “Spring and Summer”

For our very first Granny Friday, I chose the “Spring and Summer” granny square by the Crochet for You blog.

It was a very rainy and windy day outside when I started this, so I let those feelings guide my color choices, hoping the bright tones would bring some warmth and peace to a winter day.

I did hit a small snag and had to “frog” (rip out) round four after forgetting a V-stitch, but it was a great reminder to slow down and be present in the craft.

Despite some initial ruffling, the final result turned out beautifully!
