The Harmony of Autumn – Table topper and coasters

Percy Shelley wrote in his poem, Hymn to Intellectual Beauty, that “there is a harmony in autumn” and I feel this quite deeply especially this year. My mother died earlier this year, and Fall was always her favourite season. Her birthday was in October, and she loved the colours of autumn. As I think over how much I miss her, the season seems to be the perfect time to reflect on the sense of peace and balance that Autumn can bring. Its calm beauty, combined with the plenty of the harvest, is a reminder to be thankful for all we have in our present, and to accept that endings and decay are coming. These endings are an unavoidable part of our natural cycle but because it is a cycle, we also remember the promise and hope of future renewal.

I have the happiest memories of my mother in relation to family meals. Mum was a wonderful cook and I am so grateful for all the Sundays and holidays we spent together, relishing her delicious roast dinners. Canadian Thanksgiving is also in October, so I decided to design some table decor that has a vintage feel, to pay homage to the family meals of my 1970s childhood. I also wanted to bring together in the design the harmonious colours of Fall that my Mum loved so much.

My table topper begins with a Sunburst flower motif in sunflower colours. Working in the round, you then add classic granny stich rounds, interspersed with airy rounds of colourful V-stitches. And lastly, you finish the table topper with a border that’s designed to resemble deciduous trees in Fall.
