Something interesting is happening right now.
Crochet is not just “back in style” and it feels like a whole new group of people is picking it up. And honestly… they don’t all look like the typical “craft people” we used to imagine.
I’ve been noticing this more and more, and I think it says a lot about where we are right now in life and in the world.
So let’s talk about it.

It’s not just one type of person anymore
A few years ago, crochet felt more “niche”. You either learned it young, or you were already in the craft world.
Now it’s very different.
I keep seeing new crocheters coming from very different places:
- people who never did anything creative before
- women coming back to crochet after many years
- younger people who found it on TikTok or YouTube
- people who just want something calm in their hands after work
- people who are tired of screens and want something real again
It’s not one group anymore. It’s many small groups that all found the same thing.

A lot of people are not starting because of “craft”
This is something I find really interesting.
Many people are not starting crochet because they want a hobby.
They are starting because they need something.
Something like:
- a break from stress
- a break from constant scrolling
- something slow in a very fast life
- something they can actually finish
Crochet fits into that space really well.
You don’t need to be “artistic”. You don’t need to be perfect.
You just need to sit down and start.

TikTok and YouTube changed everything
Let’s be honest : this is a big reason.
Most new crocheters today didn’t learn from books or classes.
They just watched someone online and thought:
“ok… I can try that.”
Short videos made crochet feel easy to start. Not scary.
And also, people don’t start with big projects anymore.
They start small:
- a square
- a bag
- a simple scarf
- a quick gift
That “low pressure start” is a huge change compared to before.

There is also something emotional happening
I don’t know if you feel this too, but crochet today is not only about making things.
It feels more personal.
People are saying things like:
- “this helps me relax”
- “this is my quiet time”
- “this keeps my hands busy so my mind calms down”
It’s not just about the finished item.
It’s about the process.
And I think that’s why so many people are staying with it.

Some people are coming back after years
This is a big one.
A lot of crocheters today are not beginners in the real sense.
They learned when they were younger… then stopped… and now they are back.
Life changes.
Kids grow up. Work slows down. Or sometimes people just want something that feels familiar and grounding again.
And crochet is one of those crafts that you can always come back to. It doesn’t “expire”.
Crochet is becoming less “perfect” and more real
This is maybe my favorite change.
Before, there was more pressure:
perfect stitches, perfect tension, perfect results.
Now I feel people care less about that.
They want:
- something they enjoy making
- something they will actually use
- something that feels like them
It’s more relaxed. More human.
And honestly, it makes crochet more fun.

So who is picking up crochet in 2026?
If I try to sum it up simply:
It’s people who want something real again.
Not fast.
Not digital.
Not perfect.
Just something they can hold in their hands and say:
“I made this.”
I don’t think crochet is becoming popular just because of trends.
I think it’s becoming popular because life changed.
And crochet fits the kind of life many people are trying to build now:
slower, calmer, more meaningful.
And maybe that’s why so many new people are finding it at exactly this time
