The Spike Double Crochet Beanie – A Free Spike Stitch Beanie Pattern

Welcome to the penultimate pattern in the Winter Wardrobe Freeze-Along!

We are moving into Pattern #5: The Spike Double Crochet Beanie. If you’ve been following along, you know we love a good texture, but this design introduces a “visual depth” that is truly unique.

The Spike Double Crochet (sometimes called a long double crochet) is a simple technique where you work your stitch into a row below the one you are currently on.

As you can see in the photos, this creates a gorgeous interlocking “spike” effect.

It’s the ultimate way to blend two different colors from your stash!

Whether you go for high contrast or a subtle tonal shift, this beanie looks like a complex piece of woven art, yet it remains a relaxing and fast project.

What is a spike double crochet stitch?

The free spike double crochet beanie pattern utilizes a “long” stitch to create its signature look.

Instead of inserting your hook into the top of the stitch from the previous row, you reach further down into the body of a stitch from two or even three rows below.

This technique creates a thick, layered fabric that adds both warmth and a beautiful vertical element to your crochet work.

It is an excellent way to add a “professional” finish to a basic beanie shape without needing complex tools

Can I use different yarn weights for the spike stitch?

For this specific Winter Wardrobe Freeze-Along design, we recommend a standard #4 worsted weight yarn to ensure the spikes have enough definition and “pop.”

Because the spike stitch involves drawing up a longer loop of yarn, using a consistent weight throughout your stash-busting ensures that the tension remains even across the hat.

If you use a yarn that is too thin, the spikes may look stringy; if it’s too thick, the hat might become overly bulky.

Stick to your 5mm hook and worsted scraps for the best results!
