The Ori Scarf: Free Granny Stitch Crochet Pattern for Men and Women

There are crochet patterns that warm the body, and others that touch the heart.

The Ori Scarf is both. This free granny stitch crochet scarf pattern is designed for men and women, worked in a simple rectangle using the classic granny stitch.

It’s easy, rhythmic, and deeply calming, the kind of project that brings quiet moments of peace with every row.

This scarf carries a special meaning.

It’s named in memory of Ori Danino, a young Israeli man who was captured by Hamas on October 7th, 2023, held hostage for 331 days, and murdered in Gaza. As we crochet, we hold space for his light, and for the hope that compassion and creativity continue to connect us all.

More Than a Pattern. The Granny Rectangle Scarf Experience

There’s something timeless about a granny rectangle scarf, simple stitches joining together to create comfort, rhythm, and beauty.

It’s the kind of crochet that feels like coming home, where each row builds softly on the last.

The gentle repetition of the granny stitch invites calm and mindfulness, making it perfect for quiet evenings or moments when you just need to breathe and create.

This design turns a classic stitch into a modern, meaningful piece you can gift, wear, or wrap around someone you love

Instructions

For this rectangle pattern, please decide if and when to change colors.

I used the green/blue in the first 4 rounds and changed to grey for the rest.

Chain 123

Row 1: Dc3 in 6th Ch from hook( forms 1st GRst), Skip 2 Ch, GRst in next, skip 2 ch, Grst in next, continue across to end, Dc3 in last ch,

Ch5 Slst to the same ch,

Now you have a loop at the beginning (skipped 5 ch) and a loop at the end

Turn your work around. So your stitches are upside down. We will work around the same chains back

Ch 2, Grst into the ch 2 -spaces between Grst you worked across until you reach the loop at the end,

You will work the corner into the loop: (dc 3+ch3+dc 3+ch3 + dc3) all in the same loop.

Continue working Grst in between every Grst from prev round until you reach the next loop at the end,

Work a corner: (dc3+ch3+dc3+ch3+dc2) Slst to the ch 2 we worked at the beginning

Now you should have a closed rectangle.

Round 2: Sl st to the next gap between Grsts and work a (ch2+dc2,)this is your 1st Grst work a Grst in each gap til you reach the corner, The 1st ch3 space, work  (dc3+ch3+dc3), and another corner in the next ch3 space (dc3+ch3+dc3), continue working Grst in between the prev to the next ch 3 space in the corner, work (dc3+ch3+dc3)  and  (dc3+ch3+dc2) in next ch 3 space. Slst to ch 2 from the beginning to close the round

Round 3_5: Repeat Round 2, you will have Grsts between the corners  as you increase the rectangle. Always work a Grst between them.

I changed colors at round 4 and again at round 5

Finishing

Cut yarn and weave in ends,

Edge:

Sc 1 in each stitch around, (sc1+ch3+sc1 ) in every corner

Optional: Bubble edge- work on both ends

Introduce yarn in ch 3 space at the corner working right side up and on the width. *Ch 6, dc 2 in 3rd ch from hook, Slst to sane ch’ ch 3, skip 2 st Slst to next st, repeat from * to last , finish skipping 3 st. Slst to next ch3 space

**I suggest to hand-washing in room temperature water with fabric soap the item and block it to straighten and have a perfect rectangle.
