Ok this one is definitely a keeper!
The waistcoat stitch makes such a perfect dense and clean fabric I can see so much potential in so many new designs
It creates this incredibly tight, almost woven-looking fabric that just feels substantial and luxurious.
When I first tried it, I was blown away by how smooth and uniform the texture turned out.
The density is just amazing, and I’m already dreaming up all sorts of ways I could use this stitch. Blankets, bags, maybe even a chic vest โ the possibilities are totally endless.
Trust me, once you try the waistcoat stitch, you’ll be just as obsessed as I am

Let’s get to the pattern, shall we? Making the Rustic Crochet Washcloth
Materials
Cotton yarn weight #5 in two colors, I used beige and some dark brown
Hook: US Size (5.5 mm)
Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape
Gauge
- 12 st X 15 rows ( 4″ X 4″)
Sizes
This sample is 8.5โ X 8.5โ
Stitch Key
- Ch = Chain
- Sc = Single Crochet
- Dc = Double Crochet
- St = Stitch
Specialty Stitches
Waistcoat st – explained in the instructions and video tutorial below
Notes
- This pattern is written in US terminology
- This pattern is worked in rows.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as st
- I used two colors for this pattern for a rustic flair
Instructions
Chain 26
Row 1:Sc 1 in 2nd ch from hook, sc 1 in next and across to end of the row, turn (25 st)
Row 2:Ch 1, sc1 in 1st st from hook, Waistcoat st ( insert hook between the โlegsโ of the stitch you can spot a V straight through to the other side and make a single crochet. Continue making waistcoat stitches (single crochets) going through the posts of the stitches from the previous row to the last st, sc (regular) 1 in last st, turn (25 st)
Row 3-9: Repeat row 2
Change color
Row 10+11: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st from hook, sc 1 in next and across to end of row, turn(25 st)
Row 12+13:Ch 1, sc1 in 1st st from hook, Waistcoat st ( insert hook between the โlegsโ of the stitch you can spot a V straight through to the other side and make a single crochet. Continue making waistcoat stitches (single crochets) going through the posts of the stitches from the previous row to the last st, sc (regular) 1 in last st, turn (25 st)
Row 14+15: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st from hook, sc 1 in next and across to end of row, turn(25 st)
Row 16+30:Ch 1, sc1 in 1st st from hook, Waistcoat st ( insert hook between the โlegsโ of the stitch you can spot a V straight through to the other side and make a single crochet. Continue making waistcoat stitches (single crochets) going through the posts of the stitches from the previous row to the last st, sc (regular) 1 in last st, turn (25 st)
When reaching the last row corner, ch 5 and Slst to last st to form the handle
Secure yarn, cut, and weave in ends.
Finishing
You can add a single crochet round for a cleaner edge, working 1 sc st on each st around and (sc1+ch1+sc1) on each corner
