This heat wave nearly took the hook out of my hand. Some afternoons it was too hot to even sit with yarn in my lap. So everything I made this summer had to earn its place. Nothing decorative, nothing that would sit in a drawer. If I made it, I needed to actually use it.
These are the small crochet projects that made the cut. All cotton, all quick enough to finish in an evening, and every single one is something I reached for again and again, not just something I photographed once and forgot.

Green Peace Socks
This one just went up this month. Open, lacy, light enough to actually wear under a sneaker instead of just around the house. If you’ve ever made crochet socks and then never worn them past your own living room, this is the pair that changes that.
Lacy Headband
This is the one that actually mattered most to me this summer. My husband and I walk the beach most evenings once it cools down a little, and I was so tired of my hair sticking to my neck the whole way. I needed something light enough not to feel like another layer of heat, but sturdy enough to actually hold. This is what I landed on.
Puff Stitch Bandana
Small enough for one sitting, and it’s become the thing I grab when I want a little color without adding another layer. If your afternoons have felt too hot for a big project lately, this is the size of thing that still feels like you accomplished something.
Water Bottle Holder
This one is small, but it solved something real. I was so tired of a cold bottle sweating all over whatever bag I happened to be carrying. One strap, one afternoon, and that stopped being a problem.

This is the bag I actually carry now. Open mesh, cotton, and it doesn’t trap heat against your arm the way some of my other bags do. If you’ve ever finished a walk with a sweaty arm from your own bag, you already understand why I switched.

And this one is just pure summer. Cotton, breezy, feels like nothing when you put it on. I still reach for it more than almost anything else I’ve made this year, heat wave or not.

The Real Lesson From This Heat Wave
None of these were the ambitious projects I had planned for summer. They were the small, useful ones, the kind you don’t think to brag about, but you actually use every single day. If your summer has felt too hot to crochet much either, maybe that’s permission to think smaller too. Small and cotton and actually useful beats big and impressive and left half finished in a bag somewhere.
