Gemma, in her own words

Hi I’m Gemma, a mum of three beautiful children and wife to a supportive husband. I’ve always loved crafting, especially crochet, and I’m now excited that I’m starting to live my dream of being a crochet designer.
My love for crafting began as a child. I studied art and textiles at school and went on to do an Art Foundation course at college. However, I became disillusioned with the idea of pursuing a creative career due to the competition, particularly in crochet. So, I followed a conventional path and studied English and German at university, before starting a job in accounting.
Years later, I still hadn’t found my calling. I met my husband and had children, but I was still working as an part-time accountant. I started a small business making and selling concrete and Jesmonite homewares, but I hadn’t found my passion yet.
A few years ago, my mother-in-law introduced me to crochet technical editing, where patterns are reviewed and edited from a mathematical and grammatical standpoint. As an English graduate and part-time accountant, this resonated with me.
Concrete Gems: Crochet Technical Editing was born. I completed a tech editing course and began tech editing for independent designers and book publishers. I also started designing my own patterns, which are focussed on texture and nature. I love designing and hope to do this full-time soon! For the moment, I’m juggling design work with tech editing, and working part-time for another amazing crochet designer! Definitely living the crochet dream!!
