Unique Crochet Scarf Pattern – Eden

This Unique Crochet Scarf Pattern has a story behind it and it is a sad one.

That is why it is so unique to me.

This crochet scarf was designed in memory of Eden Yerushalmi, a young Israeli woman who was captured and held hostage by the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th, 2023, She survived 334 days and then was murdered in the tunnels of Gaza.

I never knew Eden, she was in my daughters’ age range.

But we all became aware of her life story , her family and friends and kept praying for her release for many many days.

Unfortunately, she was murdered along with 5 more hostages.

About the yarn I used for this pattern

I was not able to have well-known yarns to work this scarf due to all the situation in my country.

So I found this Chinesse origin yarn that is not properly labeled. This happens sometimes and what we can do is try to figure out more details about the yarn.

So, this is a blended cotton mix yarn, weight #4 ( WPI)

The variegated yarn is from the same origin but when I tested using the WPI method it came out as weight #3.

I suggest you use 1 weight yarn for the whole scarf.

Let’s get to the pattern, shall we? Making a Peace Scarf

Materials

Soft mixed Cotton Yarn, Hypoallergenic Yarn,100g/3.5oz, Light Worsted, Medium- not labeled shades: Dark Brown, Beige, Mustard, total 3 skeins

For the circles, I used the following: 

100% Acrylic Material- 100 gr, 5-strand Dyed Milk Cotton- not labeled – 0.5 skein (made in China), WPI ( #3)

Total use   of approx 240 grams / 8 oz/ 130 yards

Hook: US Size (5 mm) 

Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape

Gauge

• 12 st X 6 rows 4” X 4”

Sizes

• Each square is 7” X 7”

Stitch Key

• Ch = Chain
• Sc = Single Crochet
• St = Stitch
• Slst = Slip stitch
• Dc = Double Crochet
• Yo = Yarn over
• INC = Increase round

Notes

• This pattern uses US terminology
• This pattern is worked in rounds
• Ch 3 does count as st at the beginning of each round
• Ch1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch
• This pattern consists of eight identical squares joined
• I used multiple colors for a more vibrant style. You can choose a solid color or more.
• I used hook # 6 for both yarns to give the design a more relaxed feel.

Instructions

The circle to square

Make eight Squares( change colors as you wish)

Chain 4, Slst to 1st ch to form a circle or use the magic circle method

Round 1: Ch 3, Dc 11 more st into the circle, Slst to Ch 3 to close the round (12)

Row 2: INC Ch 3 (counts as st), dc 1 in same st, dc 2 in next st and around to end of the round, Slst to Ch 3 to close the round (24)

Row 3: INC Ch 3 (counts as st), *[dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in next st]* and around, finish with dc 2 in last st, Slst to Ch 3 to close the round (36)

Here I changed colors: to do so, secure your yarn weave in ends and cut the yarn.

Introduce the next color in any stitch

Round 4: Ch3 (counts as st), dc 1 in same st, ch 1 dc 2 in next st, ( this is our 1st corner for the square), *hdc 1 in next 2 st, sc 1 in next 3 st, dc 2 

in next st, ch 1 dc 2 in next st ( second corner), repeat from * make a 3rd corner and finish  by Slst to ch3 from the beginning

You should have 7 stitches between corners and a square shape

Round 5: Slst to ch 1 space, (dc 2+ch 2+dc2) in ch1 space (1st corner), dc 1 in each st to next Ch 1 space, (11 st), (dc 2+ch 2+dc2) in ch1 space, 2nd corner, repeat  to close the square, Slst to ch3 from the beginning

Round 6: Slst to ch 1 space, (dc 2+ch 2+dc2) in ch1 space (1st corner), dc 1 in each st to next Ch 1 space, (15 st), (dc 2+ch 2+dc2) in ch1 space, 2nd corner, repeat  to close the square, Slst to ch3 from the beginning

Weave in all ends and block the squares

Construction

Mesh Method

Using the brown color grab two squares right side facing up, introduce yarn to ch2 space in the corner of 1st square, ch 2, dc 1 joining the second square corner, ch 1, go back to 1st square, skip 1st, dc 1 in next st, go back to 2nd square, skip 1 st, dc 1 in next, ch 1, continue alternating until you reach the next corner

Join all squares using this method.

Optional: Add fringe or tassels

Finishing

Cut your yarn and weave in the ends.
