Flower Granny Square Crochet Bandana: The Free Adriene Pattern for Summer

To make this flower granny square crochet bandana, you crochet one full Adriene flower square and two half squares, sew them together into a triangle, then add a strap of single and half double crochet for the ties. It is a beginner friendly summer project that works up in an afternoon with about half a skein of cotton yarn. The full free pattern, including the stitch by stitch instructions and a video tutorial, is right here in this post.

This is one of those small makes that feels good the whole way through. Cotton in your hands, a flower opening up round by round, and at the end a pretty headscarf you will actually reach for on warm days. If you have been wanting a quick win that still looks special, this is it.

Let me walk you through everything, from the best yarn to the finishing touches.

What You Will Make

The Adriene bandana is a triangle headscarf built from granny square flowers. You crochet:

  • One full Adriene flower granny square
  • Two half squares
  • One strap worked straight across the top, which also forms the ties

Sew the three pieces into a triangle, add the strap, weave in your ends, and you are done. The flower sits front and center, which is what gives this bandana its sweet, slightly retro, boho summer look.

Finished size in the sample is about 13 inches across (without the straps) and 9 inches tall. You can size it up or down by adjusting your hook and yarn, which I will cover below.

Best Yarn for a Crochet Bandana

The right yarn makes a real difference in how your bandana feels and drapes. Here is what works best.

Cotton

Cotton is my top choice for a summer bandana. It is breathable, soft, and drapes beautifully on the head, and it is gentle on sensitive skin. Cotton comes in every color and weight you could want, so you can match it to your wardrobe.

Cotton Blend

A cotton blend gives you that same soft, breathable feel with a little more durability. Cotton linen blends are lovely for warm weather because they stay cool and lightweight.

Acrylic

If you want to wear your bandana in cooler weather, a good acrylic will keep you warmer while still being easy to care for.

Finished Size and Fit

You want your bandana to sit comfortably on the head, not too tight and not too loose. Measure the head circumference of whoever will wear it before you start.

As a guide, a bandana typically finishes around 14 to 18 inches (35.5 to 45.7 cm) wide and 7 to 9 inches (17.8 to 22.9 cm) tall, not counting the ties. Ties can run anywhere from 12 to 20 inches (30.5 to 50.8 cm) long, which gives you room to adjust the fit.

This sample measures 13 inches long (without straps) and 9 inches tall.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much yarn do I need for a crochet bandana?

Not much at all. This bandana uses about half a 100g skein of #4 weight cotton, which makes it a wonderful stash buster. One skein is plenty for one bandana with yarn to spare.

What is the best yarn for a summer crochet bandana?

Cotton or a cotton blend is best for summer. It is breathable, soft, drapes well, and is easy to wash. Save acrylic for a cooler weather version.

Is this crochet bandana good for beginners?

Yes. It uses only basic stitches: chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. If you can make a granny square, you can make this bandana. The video tutorial walks you through every step.

How do I make the bandana bigger or smaller?

Adjust your hook size and yarn weight. A larger hook and heavier yarn give you a bigger bandana, a smaller hook and lighter yarn give you a smaller one. You can also measure the head you are fitting and check against the finished size guide above before you sew everything together.

Can I wear this as a neck scarf instead of a headscarf?

Yes. The triangle shape works beautifully tied around the neck as a kerchief too. Just lengthen the ties if you want more to knot with.

Where can I get the printable version of the Adriene bandana pattern?
