Black and Grey Crochet Square | Free Pattern for a Modern Classic

I have to be honest with you , when I started designing this square, I did not expect to love it this much.

It started as my contribution to the 2026 Granny Square Month CAL + Bundle hosted by Marie from Underground Crafter, and somewhere in the middle of working it up I thought, yes, this one is special. The pinwheel centre, the way the two colours play against each other, the clean lines when you block it. It just works.

If you have been looking for a free crochet square pattern that feels modern rather than old-fashioned , not your grandma’s granny square, I think this might be exactly what you were looking for. Two colours, bold design, and once you get into the rhythm of it, it is really enjoyable to make.

Let me show you how I made it.

A Few Things I Learned Making This Free Crochet Square Pattern

The Centre Takes a Little Patience

Round 1 and 2 are the trickiest part. Work slowly and do not rush the pinwheel shape , once it establishes itself the rest of the square just flows. If something looks off, check your tension before you recount your stitches. Nine times out of ten it is tension.

Please Block It

I know, I know. But this square really does transform when you block it. The geometric lines sharpen up, the pinwheel opens out, and suddenly it looks like something you would see in a shop. Ten minutes of pinning, a few hours of drying. Completely worth it.

Joining More Than One Square

If you want to make a blanket or a bag panel, the flat slip stitch join through the back loops only is my favourite for this design. It leaves a little ridge between the squares that actually adds to the geometric look rather than fighting it.s!

What Can You Make With This Free Crochet Square Pattern?

One square is beautiful on its own, a coaster, a pot holder, a little frame-worthy piece of textile art. Four squares make a cushion cover. Twelve and you have a lap blanket you will want to keep for yourself.

The black and grey keeps it versatile. It goes with everything. But if you want to play with colour, this square loves strong contrast, navy and white, terracotta and cream, forest green and oat. The design needs that contrast to really sing
