You know those mornings when you want to look put-together but you really just want to be comfortable? That is exactly why I made this poncho. I put it on over a plain black top and my husband said, “Oh, you look nice today.” That is all I needed to know.
This is a lacy crochet poncho is open, light, and elegant.
It drapes beautifully, it works for summer evenings, for travelling, for sitting in the garden with a cup of tea.
It is the kind of thing you grab off the hook and suddenly feel like you made an effort, even when you really did not.
The pattern is free, and I will add it below. The full video tutorial is above. Let’s get into it.

What Is This Poncho?
It is a poncho made from a single rectangle — one piece of crochet that folds and joins to become a beautifully draped poncho. No shaping, no complicated construction. The lacy open stitch gives it that elegant, airy look, but it is actually very beginner-friendly once you understand the repeat.
I made mine in cream/white and it is honestly one of my favourite things I have crocheted in years. It photographs beautifully too, which is always a bonus.
What You’ll Need
- Yarn: Approx. 230 – 250 g of DK or light worsted weight yarn in a light, natural fibre, cotton or cotton blend works beautifully for the drape or fine acrylic. I used a cream acrylic.
- Hook: 5.5mm or the size that gives you a nice open fabric
- Scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Blocking mat and pins (optional but makes a big difference with lacy work)
Tension/gauge matters less for a poncho than for fitted garments , but aim for an open, relaxed fabric. If it feels stiff, go up a hook size.

Step-by-Step Tutorial
The full written pattern is in the section below. Here, I walk you through the key steps so you understand what you are making before you start.
Step 1: The Foundation Chain
You start with a foundation chain. The length of this chain determines the width of your rectangle, One hook size difference changes the drape completely.
Step 2: Working the Lacy Stitch Repeat
The stitch pattern is the Ladder stitch e.g. “a simple chains and single crochet mesh”. It is a repeating pattern, once you have done two rows, your hands know what to do and you can watch television while crocheting. That is always a good sign.
💡 Sandra’s tip: Before you fold and seam, lay your rectangle flat and check the size against yourself. Hold it up to your body. It is much easier to add or remove a few rows now than after you have finished the border.

Tips for Making This Poncho Your Own
- Choose your colour intentionally. Cream and white are classic and photograph beautifully, but this poncho works just as well in navy, soft grey, or sage green. Whatever you reach for most in your wardrobe, make it in that colour first.
- Wear it over everything. I have worn mine over a plain t-shirt, over a summer dress, and over a long-sleeved top in a cooler evening. It is genuinely the most versatile thing I have made this year.
- It makes a wonderful gift. Especially for someone who does not crochet, they genuinely cannot believe you made it yourself. That reaction never gets old.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this crochet poncho tutorial suitable for beginners?
Yes! if you can chain, double crochet, and count stitches confidently, you can make this. The stitch repeat looks more complicated than it is. By row three, you will be in a rhythm.
How long does it take to crochet this poncho?
Most crocheters will finish this over a weekend or across a few evenings. It is not a quick project like a dishcloth, but it is far faster than it looks. The lacy stitch covers ground quickly because of the open spaces between stitches.
Can I adjust the size?
Yes. To make it larger, add to your foundation chain in multiples of the stitch repeat, or add extra rows to make the rectangle longer. To make it smaller, reduce in the same way. The single-rectangle construction makes sizing very straightforward.
What weight of yarn works best?
DK or light worsted gives the most elegant result for this type of poncho light enough to drape, substantial enough to show the stitch detail. Very chunky yarn would lose the lacy quality entirely.

What to make next?
If you enjoyed this poncho, you might love my lacy summer shawl tutorial same relaxed aesthetic, slightly faster to make. Or if you want a challenge, my crochet top tutorial uses a similar stitch in a more fitted shape.
