What Is the Spiral Butterfly Wall Hanging?

This is a crochet wall hanging that combines two of my favorite things, a playful spiral drop in soft blue and a granny-square butterfly in warm mustard and blush pink.

Together they create a piece that feels both whimsical and elegant, like something you would find in a cozy, well-loved home.

It makes a beautiful handmade gift for a friend, a daughter, a sister, or honestly, for yourself.

Because sometimes the best gift is the one you make with your own hands and keep. 💛

Before You Start: A Few Tips

Since this is an intermediate pattern, here are a few things that will make your experience smoother:

The spiral: The corkscrew effect is created by working more stitches than usual into each stitch of a foundation chain. Don’t panic if it curls dramatically, that is exactly what it is supposed to do! 😄

The butterfly: The butterfly is worked as one single piece and then folded to create the wing shape. It is a satisfying little construction trick once you fold it and see the butterfly appear, you will want to make a dozen of them!

Take your time with the fold and make sure it is centered before you sew it in place

Assembly: Lay everything flat before you attach the butterfly to the spiral. A few pins help you get the position just right before you sew.

Let’s get to the pattern, shall we? Making The Spiral Butterfly Wall Hanging

Difficulty

Experience Beginner

Materials

• For this sample, I used Weight #4  cotton yarn in 4 colors
• Hook: US Size (4 mm) 
• Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape

Finished Size

This sample is  18” tall

Stitch Key

• Ch = Chain
• St = Stitch
• Sc = Single Crochet
• Dc = Double Crochet
• Hdc = Half Double  Crochet
• Slst = Slip stitch

Notes

• This pattern is written in US terminology
• This pattern is worked in rounds and rows
• Ch 2 does count as st at the beginning of each round
• Ch1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch
• This pattern is for one crochet spiral and one butterfly
• I used four solid colors – you can change colors at different rounds as you wish

Instructions

The Spiral

Ch 50, leaving a tail

Row 1: Hdc 3 in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 3 in next ch and across to the end of the ch.

Change color 

Row 2: Sc 2 in 1st st from hook, sc 2 in next and across to the end of the row, leave 10” yarn and cut ( this will be for hanging)

Secure yarns and weave in ends

The Butterfly

Start with 1 color and Ch 8 and Slst to 1st ch to close a circle

Round 1: ch2+dc 2, ch 2, *dc 3, ch 2, repeat 6 more time for a total of 8 3dc clusters, Slst to beginning ch2, secure and cut yarn

Change color

Round 2: Start at any ch2 space,* (dc 3+ ch 2+ dc 3), repeat in every ch 2 space around, Slst to 1st st to close the round

Round 3: Slst to next ch 2 space, *(dc 6+ch2+dc6) in ch 2 space, Slst in between next 2 clusters, repeat around, finish with slst to last. Secure yarn, cut and weave in all ends.

Construction

Chain 20 to make the body of the butterfly, snipping the ends off near to the knots, wrap it around the butterfly wings and tie a knot,  attach to the end of the spiral using the tail and needle.

On the upper side of the spiral ch 10 and Slst  to form a hanging  loop

Optional: leave end and add beads

Finishing

Secure the yarn, weave in the ends, and cut the yarn.
