The Puff Stitch Beanie – A Free Textured Crochet Beanie Pattern

Welcome back to the Winter Wardrobe Freeze-Along! I hope you enjoyed our first project, but get ready to level up the “squish factor.”

Today, we are releasing Pattern #2: The Puff Stitch Beanie.

If there is one stitch that screams winter comfort, it’s the puff stitch. It creates a thick, pillowy fabric that is essentially a hug for your head!

This design is specifically created to help you play with color.

As you can see in my sample, alternating colors between the puff rows and the base rows really makes the texture “pop.”

It’s a fun, engaging way to use up those smaller scraps of #4 weight yarn you have lying around.

How much yarn do I need for a puff stitch beanie?

Because puff stitches are made by pulling up multiple loops in the same space, they are known as “yarn eaters.”

For a standard adult-sized beanie using weight #4 yarn, you will typically need between 200 and 225 yards.

Since our Freeze-Along is all about stash-busting, this is the perfect time to combine two partial skeins of coordinating colors to ensure you have enough yardage while creating a beautiful, striped effect!

Is the puff stitch suitable for crochet beginners?

Yes! While the puff stitch looks intricate, it is actually very beginner-friendly once you master your tension.

The key is to keep your loops loose as you pull them up so your hook can glide through all the loops on the final pull-through.

If you can do a double crochet, you can definitely tackle this textured beanie.

It’s a great “growth” project that results in a boutique-quality hat you’ll be proud to wear or donate.
