Hello, my friend! Have you ever looked at a gorgeous cake of variegated yarn and thought, “I want to wear those colors, but I don’t want a complicated pattern to hide them”?
That is exactly where I found myself this week! I had some stunning YarnSmith Lagoon DK in my stash, and I just knew it needed to become something flowy, effortless, and a little bit magical.
Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes of my latest “freehand” adventure with a One Rectangle Crochet Poncho
We’re making a poncho that is literally just one big rectangle, no complicated shaping, no stressful counting, just the rhythmic beauty of the V-stitch and some super cute crochet pom-poms to finish it off.

Why the V-Stitch & Variegated Yarn are Best Friends
One of the biggest questions I get is how to handle “busy” yarns without the project looking messy.
When you have a yarn with lots of color changes, like the blues, oranges, and purples in this Lagoon DK, you want a stitch that provides texture without competing with the colors.
The V-stitch is my absolute favorite for this! It creates a light, airy fabric that lets the colors flow beautifully.
By using two strands held together and a larger 6.5mm hook, I managed to get a drape that is so soft it practically floats
Construction Tips & That Gorgeous Neckline
You might be wondering, “How does a rectangle actually become a poncho?” It’s all about the placement of the neck opening!
I worked mine from elbow to elbow, leaving a simple gap in the center for the head.
But the real secret sauce is the “flowy” turtleneck. Instead of a tight, itchy neck, I continued the V-stitch in the round with a few strategic increases to make it drape softly away from the face.
It’s cozy enough for a chilly evening but light enough for a Mediterranean winter!
Watch the Full Journey!
Want to see exactly how I caked the yarn, handled the V-stitch direction, and added those adorable crochet pom-poms?
I filmed the entire process from the first chain to the final reveal (including a little “oops” moment with the yarn supply!)
