Remember When You Didn’t Block? let’s talk about how to wet block crochet projects!
I’ll admit it – I used to be that crocheter who’d finish a project and immediately wear it or gift it.
Blocking? Pfft, who has time for that? But oh boy, was I missing out!
After years of hook-and-yarn adventures, I’ve seen the light. Blocking is like magic for your crochet pieces!
Why Bother with Blocking?
Look, I get it. You’ve just finished that gorgeous shawl and you’re itching to show it off.
But trust me, a little patience goes a long way.
Blocking makes your work look crisp, professional, and honestly? Just plain better.
It’s especially amazing for natural fibers and lace patterns – turns your “eh, it’s okay” into “wow, I made that?!”
Ready to Give it a try?
Awesome!
Here’s what you’ll need for some wet blocking action:
- Something to block on (fancy mats are nice, but your carpet works too!)
- Pins (rustproof, please!)
- Gentle soap (wool wash is great, but mild shampoo works in a pinch)
- Lukewarm water
- A towel
Let’s Do This!
Bath Time: Fill your sink with lukewarm water and a splash of soap. Dunk your project and let it soak for about half an hour.
Squeeze (Don’t Wring!): Gently press out the water. No twisting!
Towel Burrito: Roll your project in a towel to soak up excess water.
Pin It Down: Lay it out on your blocking surface and shape it. Use pins to hold everything in place.
Wait It Out: Let it dry completely before unpinning. I know, the waiting is tough!
The Big Reveal
Once it’s dry, you’ll see the difference.
Those lace patterns? They’ll pop! The edges? Crisp and even. It’s like giving your crochet a spa day!
