How I Turned a Purple Yarn Challenge Into My New Favorite Granny Square Hooded Scarf

Have you ever stared at a skein of yarn in your stash and thought, “I love you, but I have absolutely no idea what to do with you”?

That was me with this gorgeous, chunky purple yarn.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I almost never work with purple, seriously, check my shop, it’s like a purple-free zone!

But I decided to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to design a Granny Square Hooded Scarf

I paired it with a soft gray (which secretly has some purple undertones) and went down a total Ravelry and Pinterest rabbit hole until it hit me: the world needs more cozy, unique hooded scarves.

The Magic of the Granny Square Twist

I’ve been in a total granny square era lately, cardigans, sweaters, you name it!

For this project, I wanted to take that classic granny square feel and give it a “Sandra Stitches” twist.

I started with two granny squares for the hood and used the granny stitch to build the body. I even did a little research (shoutout to Kelsey from PassioKnit Crochet!) to figure out the best way to join the squares to give the neck and head just the right amount of “wiggle room.”

The result is a hood that’s cozy but doesn’t squish your hair, perfect if you have bangs and hate how beanies flatten them!

Grab Your Hook and Watch the Reveal!

Sometimes a blog post just doesn’t capture the full “vibe” of a project, especially when there are chunky stitches and fluffy pom-poms involved!

If you want to see exactly how this purple challenge came together, hear more about the yarn I used, and see the finished look in action, I’d love for you to join me over on YouTube.

I’m sharing the “behind-the-scenes” of how I designed this Granny Square Hooded Scarf , including the research process and the little tweaks I made to ensure the perfect fit. Plus, you can see those crochet pom-poms up close!

Adding Length and Those Signature Pom-Poms

To keep the scarf from being “too much” granny square, I alternated five rows of granny stitches with single squares.

It gives it a beautiful, stripy rhythm that isn’t overwhelming.

But the real stars? The finishing touches! I added a delicate picot stitch around the face of the hood for a feminine feel and finished the ends of the scarf with my absolute favorite crochet pom-poms.

It’s long, it’s warm, and it can be worn as a hood or just draped as a chunky wrap.

Honestly, I’m so glad I took the purple challenge, I might just have to write up the formal pattern for this one!

FAQ (Answering Potential Questions)

Is this project beginner-friendly? Absolutely! If you know how to make a basic granny square and the granny stitch (clusters of double crochets), you can definitely make this. It’s all about joining simple shapes to create something that looks way more complex than it actually is.

What kind of yarn did you use? I used Yarnsmith Create Chunky, which is a weight 5, 100% acrylic yarn. It’s soft, easy to work with, and gives the scarf that “bulky” cozy feeling without being too heavy on your neck
