I wanted to design something open, lacy, and light for warm days when you still want something handmade on your head but don’t want the heat.

This is that headband. Made with soft cotton yarn, the airy stitch shows off beautifully, and the little bead ties at the ends give it that relaxed, boho feel I love.

It works up fast and makes the most beautiful handmade gift

Why You Will Love This Headband

There are so many crochet headband styles out there, chunky winter bands, wide ear warmers, and textured cables.

This one is completely different. It is light, airy, and made to be worn on warm days without feeling like you are overheating.

The lacy cluster stitch creates a beautiful open texture that lets air through while still looking polished and handmade.

The triangle tie ends mean you can style it so many ways: tied behind the head, at the top, or loose over a low bun. And the optional beads at the tips add just the right amount of charm without being overdone.

I chose cotton yarn and I strongly recommend it for anything worn on the head. It breathes, it washes easily, and it feels comfortable against your skin all day.

For a winter version, a soft acrylic would work too, just know the drape will be slightly different.

This is the yarn I had at hand – do not forget I make a sample for you to learn, so be creative and choose the yarn you love. Feel it before starting your project.

I know there are a million different yarn choices out there, but that also depends on where you live, so just be creative!

Any 100% cotton yarn, 30 grams, from your stash

Hook: US Size (4 mm)

Sizes

Can be modified as you wish

This sample is: 2.75” wide and 30” long

Stitch Key

  • Ch = Chain
  •  Sc = Single Crochet
  • St = Stitch
  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • Hdc = Half Double Crochet
  • Yo = Yarn Over

Specialty Stitches

We will have a combination of trebles and doubles in a single cluster. Explained in the pattern

Half Closed means you work halfway through the stitch and do not finish it, leaving the last loops on the hook

Sandra’s tip: Always measure your head before you start and compare to the starting chain. The ties give you plenty of adjustability, but the body should fit comfortably without pulling. If you have thick hair or wear it piled up, lean toward a longer starting chain.

Notes

  • The pattern is written in US terminology
  • The pattern is worked in rows
  • Ch1 does not count as a stitch at the beginning of each row
  • Ch 2 counts as a stitch at the beginning of a row

  • This pattern calls for multiples of 4+2
  • You can work this pattern with one color or multiple, as you wish- I used one color

Tips for the Best Results

  • Keep tension relaxed — this stitch is designed to be open and airy. If you crochet tightly, try a 4.5mm hook instead.
  • Count your chain-5 spaces in Row 1 — this is your foundation. Getting this row right makes everything else easier.
  • Match your triangles — count the stitches on the first triangle and use the same number on the second. Symmetry matters here.
  • Leave a long enough tie chain — chain 20 is a minimum. Chain more if you have long or thick hair.
  • For gifting, make in cream or white first — the lacy stitch shows most beautifully in a light, solid colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best yarn for a crochet headband?

Cotton yarn is the best choice. It is breathable, washable, and comfortable against the skin. Any DK or worsted weight 100% cotton on a 4mm hook gives beautiful definition for a lacy pattern. I used Drops Paris — soft, affordable, and available in many colours.

How long should a crochet tie-back headband be?

For an adult, the total length, including ties, should be around 30 inches (76 cm). The body of the headband — the lacy part — should fit snugly around your head. The triangle ties give you adjustability for different hairstyles and head sizes.

Is this pattern good for beginners?

Yes! it uses single crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet only. The cluster stitch looks complex but is just three half-finished stitches closed together. The full video tutorial shows every step. Most people find it straightforward once they complete their first cluster.

Can I make this as a gift?

Absolutely. This is one of my favourite quick, handmade gifts. It uses very little yarn, works up in one sitting, and looks beautiful. It is perfect for Christmas, Hanukkah, birthdays, teacher gifts, or any time you want to give something handmade and special.

Do I need to block a crochet headband?

A light, wet block makes a big difference with lacy crochet. Wet the finished headband, press out the water gently, pin flat, and leave to dry fully. The lacy stitches open up, and the headband looks much more polished. Cotton yarn blocks beautifully.

Can I make this headband wider?

Sure! Simply continue repeating rows 2 and 3 until you reach your desired width. Each two-row repeat adds approximately half an inch of width. The pattern scales perfectly.
